How do I turn the voice recorder off?

The voice recorder can be turned off using the hold button.
What does USB audio mean?

USB audio means that you can use the Voice recorder as a PC Speaker and you can use it as a microphone to record directly into the PC using the USB cable.
How do I turn the USB Audio function on?

Please press the folder/menu button and click the FF/REW buttons until you get to USB Audio.
Then press the REC button to access the function and press the FF/REW button to select “on”. Then press the REC button again. The USB Audio function is now turned on.
I have Windows NT, Windows 98 and Macintosh PC´s. On the box it says the USB Audio function cannot be used with Windows 98, Windows NT or Macintosh. Is there any way I can still use the USB Audio function?

It is not possible to use the Voice recorder as a speaker or to record directly to Windows NT, Windows 98 and Macintosh using the USB cable. But it is possible to record directly into the PC using the KP4 cable.
What is the KP4 cable and how do I use it?

The KP4 cable is a cable which can be plugged into the sound card of your PC from the microphone jack of the Voice recorder.
When I record directly into the PC using the KP4 cable the recorder displays a message “change rec mode” and I cannot record. Why is that?

It is not possible to record in LP mode into the PC. Please change the record mode to SP.
Can I use memory cards in the voice recorder?

No the voice recorder has internal memory; there is no way to use memory cards.
Is it possible to extend the internal memory?

No, there is no way to extend the internal memory.
Can I edit my files using the PC?

Yes, you can edit your files using the DSS player software supplied with the DS-330.
How can I edit my files using the DSS player software?

1. Please open the DSS Player software and right click the file you want to edit and select edit.

2. The following windows will display and you can select for example record or insert recording.

3. After you have edited your file click the X to close.

4. The following message will appear. Please click on save.

5. The edited files are always saved in the message tray.

When I connect the Voice recorder to the PC it says “please wait” and I cannot download. What does this mean?

If your voice recorder displays the message “please wait” it means either that it is not connected properly or that the driver is not installed. Please make sure the voice recorder is plugged directly into the USB port in the back of the computer and reinstall the driver.
Where do I find the driver?

The driver is on the DSS Player software in the DSX folder.
Can I use a Voice recognition software with the files recorded with the DS-330?

Yes you can, but the files have to be recorded in DSS format in the SP mode.
What is a DSS file?

DSS (Digital Speech Standard) files, are 13 to 28 times smaller than standard. WAV sound files, and are optimized for speech recognition applications. DSS files are also ideal for sending e-mail to colleagues and friends. The included Olympus DSS Player software quickly reads these files and allows IBM ViaVoice to automatically convert them into text with one mouse click. Transcription can also be done manually with an optional transcription kit including a footswitch and headset. Users can download the entire contents of the recorder, one specific folder or even one specific recording.
How do I select the SP mode on the Voice reorder?

Please turn the DS-330 on and press the folder/menu button and go to REC Mode. Press the REC button and select SP using the FF/REW buttons. Then press the REC button again.
I want to use the Alarm function on the voice recorder. How long does the Alarm sound?

The alarm will sound for 5 minutes and then stop.
I want the alarm to turn on everyday at the same time, do I have to set it everyday or are the settings saved?

The alarm will sound at the scheduled time every day unless the alarm playback setting is cleared.
I recorded one file, but when I want to record another file and press the REC button it keeps recording in the first file. How do I record a new file?

To record a new file please click the NEW button and then press the REC button.
Can I send my DSS files via email? If yes how do I do it?

Yes, you can attach voice files to your e-mails.
Please refer to the user's manual for your e-mail software to see how to send attachments with e-mails.

NOTE: Even if the person to whom you send a voice file does not have the DSS Player, he/she will be able to play the voice file using DSS Player-Lite. You can download DSS Player-Lite free from the Olympus home page: http://www.olympus.com.

  1. Start DSS-Player
  2. Start the e-mail software, then select New Mail
  3. Attach the voice file
    Select the voice file to attach from the Dss-Player's Voice File List Box and drag and drop the file into the New Mail text window

NOTE: If your e-mail software is not compatible with the above operation, select the voice file to send from the folder where the voice file is located and send the file as an attached file according to the functions of the e-mail software.
Windows: The default folder is set to C:\Program Files\Olympus\DSS Player 2002\Message\Folder A (or B,C,D,E).
Macintosh: By default, voice files are stored on Macintosh HD:DSS Player for MAC:Message Folder:Folder A (or B,C,D,E).

Can I edit the files using the Voice recorder?

Yes you can edit your files using the Voice recorder.
I want to overwrite a recording on the voice recorder. How do I do that?

You can overwrite a previously recorded file from any point within the file.
Note: Overwritten recordings will erased.

1. Choose and play the file you want overwrite
2. Press the STOP button where you want to start overwriting.
a. Current playback time
b. Total recording time of the file being played
3. Press the REC/SET button to start overwriting
The record/play indicator lamp glows red.
 
4. Press the STOP button to stop overwriting.  

I would like to insert a file into my previously recorded files is that possible and how do I do that?

Additional recordings can be inserted into previously recorded files. 

1. Choose and play the file you want to insert.
2. While playing a file, press the FOLDER/MENU button if you want insert additional recording.
"INSERT REC?" appears on the display
3. Press the REC/SET button to start inserting additional recording.
As insert recording progresses, remaining memory grows smaller.
a. Remaining recording time
 
4. Press the STOP button to stop inserting additional recording.  

Can I convert DSS in MP3 Format?

It is not possible to convert DSS directly into MP3 Format. But if you convert DSS file in Wave then you can use any conventional software to convert the Wave file into MP3.
How do I convert a DSS File into a wave file?

To convert the DSS File into .wav please do the following:

Right click on the DSS File and select convert to wave file. The file will be converted to Wave.

I converted my DSS File into Wave. How can I convert it back to DSS?

It is not possible to convert Wave into DSS; when you convert into wave it is always saved as a copy. Please, do not delete the original DSS file if you still want to use it.
Can I burn my DSS files onto a CD and listen to my files in my regular CD Player?

You can but the files have to be converted into Wave and then you can burn them as a music CD.

What is the difference between DM-10 and DM-20?

Both recorders are the same except the internal memory. The DM-10 has 64 MB internal memory and the DM-20 has 128 MB internal memory.
How many folders do the DM-10/DM-20 Voice recorder have?

The DM-10/DM-20 Voice recorder has 6 folders (folder A,B,C,D,E and the F folder for music files)
Since the Voice recorder has 64 MB (DM-20 has 128MB) memory, does that mean that I can fill the 64 MB (128MB on DM-20) memory with the Voice files and then another 64 MB (128MB on DM-20) with music?

No, If you have filled the 64 MB (or 128 MB on DM-20) memory with Voice files you cannot copy any music on it. The same is also true if you fill the memory with music; you cannot record any voice files.
Can I use memory cards in the voice recorder?

No the voice recorder has internal memory, there is no way to use memory cards.
Is it possible to extend the internal memory?

No, there is no way to extend the internal memory.
Can I use the DM-10/DM-20 Voice recorder with Voice recognition software?

Yes, the DSS Voice files can be used with a voice recognition software.
If necessary the files can also be converted into wave to be used with Dragon Naturally Speaking.
I want my secretary to transcribe my files for me. Is there a footswitch or transcriber kit available that can be used with this Voice recorder?

Yes, the transcriber kit that is available for the DM-10/DM-20 is called the AS2000 kit. It includes the footswitch, headphones and the additional software that will allow you to use the footswitch.
Where do I find the driver for the Voice recorder?

The driver is on the DSS Player software that was supplied with the Voice recorder.
For which operating systems do I have to install a driver?

A driver needs to be installed only for Windows 98. Since the Voice recorder is a mass storage device there is no need to install drivers for Windows 2000/ME and XP.
Can I use the Voice recorder with Macintosh?

Yes, you can use the Voice recorder with Macintosh 8,6 and higher.
For Macintosh 8,6 USB, mass storage support is needed from the www.apple.com website.

Which software can I use to import music files into the Voice recorder?

The Windows Media Player supplied with the Voice recorder is not for Macintosh. Windows Media Player Software for Macintosh is downloadable at the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx.
