World Environment Day - Caring for a better environment
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and taking place on June 5 each year, World Environment Day seeks to stimulate attention and awareness to matters concerning the environment. This year, it also marks the commencement of the annual Olympus Environmental Awareness Month. Now in its 32nd year, it represents a month-long company campaign to highlight environment-related issues.

A major theme of this year’s campaign in Europe is the collection and recycling of spent batteries. The merits of environmentally-friendly battery disposal will thereby be a subject all Olympus staff will learn more about. In cooperation with GRS – a foundation based in Germany that specialises in responsible battery disposal and recycling – special collection points for used batteries will also be set up.

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the exhibition “Dialogue in the Dark” was showcased in Hamburg – for the first time as an innovative workshop – with Olympus digital cameras enabling the dialogue between the blind and sighted persons. How can the blind express themselves visually and creatively through photography?

These questions were intensely discussed by participants from 19 different countries – and all was perfectly documented in Olympus quality. The workshop was organised by Mexican photographer Gina A. With the theme of “See through the soul”, she developed this project to show society that it is also possible for visually-impaired persons to create visual art. For more about the activities from “Dialogue in the Dark”, please visit www.dialog-im-dunkeln.de
